What can be done about an ageing neck and hands

We often talk about rejuvenation of the face because it is the most challenging part of the body to rejuvenate in a natural looking way. Injectors are artists and patients want different results so that what is beautiful for one person is overdone for someone else, the best example is lip augmentation.

The rejuvenation of the neck and hands is a simpler task.

Neck and decollété rejuvenation: there are many options and I will start with the least expensive and simplest methods.

  1. Sun avoidance – one of the biggest factors contributing to ageing of the skin and skin damage that can lead to skin cancer. I recommend avoiding the sun in peak times ex. 11am-3pm, wearing UPF rated clothing, a wide brimmed hat sun protection factor of 30 or more. It is ideal to apply it on thick and every 2 hours.
  2. Prescription vitamin A cream – Retinoids applied to the neck and decollété in a daily manner can improve the appearance and quality of the skin. It typically takes 3 months to see a difference and results plateau at 9 months. Tretinoine 0.05% cream can be started gradually and hydrating cream can be applied to the area 30 minutes before and after if the skin becomes irritated.
  3. Chemical Peels – Peels cause the skin to regenerate and thicken producing an improved quality and appearance to the skin. It is administered as 1 treatment per week for 6 weeks and can be repeated every 6 months
  4. Injections of dermal fillers to fill necklace lines or to treat the general areas of the neck and decollété.
  5. Platelet rich plasma – platelets found in blood contain growth factors that can stimulate the skin to regenerate itself producing natural, healthy looking skin. (see blog What are the different types of injectable products at your clinic)

Hand Rejuvenation – Hands can betray someone’s age even if their face, neck and décolleté look youthful. Hands are typically treated with dermal filler or Platelet Rich Plasma.
